Interview with Auburn, the Princess of Beluga Heights
iWontSTFU.com had the chance to talk to rising star Auburn! The 21-year-old singer is signed to J.R.Rotem’s record label Beluga Heights and is currently working on her debut album. Additionally, Auburn will open up for “Whatcha Say” singer Jason Derülo (we reported)! So, let’s hear what the lovely and humble singer got to say.
Hey Auburn, nice to meet you. How’s your day going so far?
My days going pretty good, GOD is good, thank you for asking.
You once said that you used to be a tomboy and that you attached importance to your education. How does this work with the wish of becoming a pop star (laughs)?
Well, doing music only reflects off of that, who I am. Im still a major tomboy at heart, only a lot more mature. As far as education that’s a “rest of you’re life” kind of deal, lol. still very important.
You were born in Minneapolis and have lived together with your mother and your two older siblings. Did they always support your dream?
Always. GOD, My mom and family are the reason my doubts went away.
That’s good and important. What regular job would you probably do if you hadn’t gotten this opportunity to work in the music biz?
If I wasn’t a writer or film maker, I’d try and major in something in communications, various opportunities there. (laughs)
You’ve been promoting your music via MySpace and YouTube mainly. Do you think that this was the key to be recognized as you can appeal to a much wider audience?
The key was GOD and my fans, they’re the backbone behind the push my music, always have been. Myspace was the vehicle that started it, andd Youtube gave it a little gas. (laughs) I don’t know why I just did a car reference.
(laughs) You’re the only lady on Beluga Heights. Does this put any pressure on you?
Not at all, Beluga is a family. Everyone treats each other like family.
Are you in touch with your male label mates like Jason Derülo or Sean Kingston? Any future collaborations planned?
I’m more in touch with Iyaz than anyone else, why? I have no idea, that’s Yagga Man (laughs). But over all yes, I keep in touch with Jason, Mann… the family.
Your single “La La La” features Iyaz and it was produced by no other than star producer J.R. Rotem. Can you tell us something about working with them?
Working with amazing artists can only have an amazing outcome, so I’d say amazing. Most people don’t know but Iyaz wrote the song, my original fans could even tell the style alone was different from most of my songs (laughs). They called me in to hear it, and surprisingly I was all for it. Working with someone like J.R or Iyaz, is an honor.
Absolutely! What can we expect from your album?
You can expect, different. My sound alone is really different… I listen to almost every genre of music and that inspires my writing style. It’ll be a little taste of me I guess.
What’s important to you when recording songs?
Being in the write mind frame, if I go in there… expecting to only “sound good” instead of focusing on what I’m actually saying, I can always tell. But I go in there just ready to express what vie written down… it makes a big difference.
The music scene is currently very influenced by dance music. Do you like it or would you like go into another direction?
(laughs) I have many different directions. I love to dance, who doesn’t, but that’s not all my music is. It isn’t all about dancing, it’s very personal, a relative message in a song always hold more affect on the listener than a repetitive dance track… in my opinion.
Personally, I think most of the recently released albums were rather boring and not breathtaking. What was the last album you purchased, what did you think of it and is there an upcoming release that you are looking forward to?
I haven’t purchased an album in GOD knows how long (laughs). But hopefully you don’t find my album “boring” (laughs).
I hope so too (laughs). You’re also going to be on tour soon. What have you planned for your shows?
Im still in the process of developing the show, but it’ll be great. Fun, laid back, audience involvement, just me having fun on stage.
That sounds great. Where would you like to be in ten years? Any goals you would like to have accomplished until then?
10 years?! I don’t even know where ill be in 10 days (laughs). I never look that far ahead really. I pray as I go. But, I guess I’d say in 10 years, GOD willing I see myself just as humble… 10 years more experienced, doing whatever I do to the best of my ability.
Before we have to end this interview, I would like to play a little game. I will say a term and you will tell me the first thing that comes into your mind.

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. But think about if you added some great graphics or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this website could definitely be one of the most beneficial in its field. Good blog!
